Cortina d’Ampezzo may be in the spotlight as co-host of the 2026 Winter Olympics, but don’t make the mistake of thinking the Dolomites are only for snow-sports enthusiasts. You don’t have to like skiing – or even snow – to fall for this spectacular corner of the Italian Alps. All it takes is an appreciation for dramatic scenery, fresh mountain air, and a few well-planned days.
 

Two of our travel specialists recently returned from the Dolomites themselves, and one of their biggest takeaways was how easy and rewarding the region is for first-time visitors. Whether you’re interested in culture, cuisine, hiking, wellness, or simply soaking in the views from a scenic cable car, this is one of the most polished and stunning regions in all of Italy.

 

 

 

Based on firsthand experience, we’ve outlined two ideal 5-night itineraries – one for travelers who want the freedom of a self-drive trip, and another for those who prefer the convenient services of private drivers and trains. Both offer a wonderful introduction to this dreamy alpine destination, no matter the season.

Why it Works.

This option is best for travelers who want more flexibility and spontaneity, and who don’t mind navigating winding mountain roads. Like many of our clients, our travel advisors recently began their own journey in Venice before heading north into the mountains, turning the trip into a seamless blend of iconic Italian cities and dramatic alpine scenery.

 

This particular route was chosen very intentionally. Cortina d’Ampezzo provides a “wow” first impression – glamorous, lively, and surrounded by some of the most recognizable peaks in the Dolomites. From there, you can continue west into the Val Gardena, where the atmosphere shifts to something even more authentically South Tyrolean – a confluence of three charming towns, each with easy access to panoramic lifts and alpine meadows.

 

Together, these two bases give a well-rounded first experience of the Dolomites: stylish and cinematic in the east, authentic and quietly luxurious in the heart of the mountains.

Day by Day Overview.

Cortina d’Ampezzo (2 nights) + Ortisei/Val Gardena (3 nights)

 

Day 1: Venice to Cortina d’Ampezzo

Pick up your rental car in Venice and drive about two hours into the eastern Dolomites. Settle into Cortina, the “Queen of the Dolomites”, a stylish alpine town surrounded by dramatic peaks. Enjoy the remainder of the day getting acquainted with the local culture and cuisine.

 

Day 2: Lakes and Iconic Peaks

Spend the day exploring the highlights around Cortina. Visit the turquoise waters of Lago di Misurina, continue toward the famous Tre Cime di Lavaredo, and stop at Lago di Braies if time allows.

 

Day 3: Scenic Drive to Val Gardena

Drive west through some of the Dolomites’ most spectacular mountain passes. Pause at viewpoints along the way before arriving in Ortisei, a charming village in Val Gardena known for its Ladin culture and easy lift access. Spend the afternoon exploring the village’s pedestrian center, artisan wood-carving shops, and cafés.

 

Day 4: Seceda or Alpe di Siusi

Take a cable car directly from town to the high alpine meadows of Alpe di Siusi or the dramatic ridgelines of Seceda. Enjoy gentle hikes, panoramic views, and lunch at a typical rifugio.

 

Day 5: Sella Pass Scenic Loop

Drive part of the famous Sella Ronda circuit, stopping in mountain villages like Canazei or Corvara. This is one of the most scenic drives in the Alps.

 

Day 6: Departure

Drive to drop off the rental car, typically Venice or Milan, for onward travel.

Why it Works.

One of the pleasant surprises of the Dolomites is how easily it can be reached by train from Venice, making it a natural extension of a stay in northern Italy. This is our favorite route for a relaxed, self-drive-free approach with a convenient mix of train travel, privately-guided excursions, and time to enjoy on your own.

 

Bolzano was a favorite for our travel specialists not just for its elegant, arcaded streets and alpine backdrop, but for the food. Here you can experience a unique blend of Italian and Austrian influences firsthand, with memorable meals ranging from handmade pasta to hearty Tyrolean specialties and local wines.

 

From there, continue on to Cortina d’Ampezzo, the stylish heart of the eastern Dolomites and recent Olympic host. Surrounded by some of the region’s most dramatic peaks, Cortina offers that immediate “wow” factor – along with easy access to scenic drives, cable cars, and mountain trails. For us, one of the real highlights is a leisurely lunch at a charming mountain rifugio. Reaching it by cable car, you can soak in panoramic views and watch the hikers or cyclists drift in and out. It’s the kind of invigorating yet unhurried scenic experience that perfectly captures the spirit of the Dolomites.

Day by Day Overview.

Bolzano (3 nights) + Cortina (3 nights)

 

Day 1: Train from Venice to Bolzano

Take a scenic train journey from Venice to Bolzano. Settle into this elegant alpine town where Italian and Austrian influences blend beautifully, and enjoy a relaxed evening exploring the arcaded historic center.

 

Day 2: Discover Bolzano & Ötzi the Iceman

Enjoy a private walking tour of Bolzano, learning about its unique Ladin and Tyrolean heritage. In the afternoon, you may like to go on your own to the South Tyrol Archaeology Museum to see Ötzi the Iceman, one of Europe’s most fascinating archaeological discoveries. If you like wine, we can add a local wine tasting.

 

Day 3: Mount Seceda & Funes Valley Private Day Trip

Spend the day exploring iconic Dolomites scenery with a private driver-guide. Ascend to Mount Seceda by cable car for sweeping views of its dramatic ridgeline, and the chance for a break at a mountain rifugio. Then continue into the peaceful Funes Valley, where storybook churches and alpine meadows sit beneath the soaring Odle peaks.

 

Day 4: Great Dolomites Road to Cortina

Transfer from Bolzano to Cortina d’Ampezzo via the legendary Great Dolomites Road, one of the most spectacular scenic drives in the Alps. Stop in charming mountain villages along the way before arriving in Cortina, where you’ll enjoy a short walking tour of this stylish alpine resort town.

 

Day 5: Cinque Torri or Lake Braies

Choose between a scenic excursion to the dramatic rock formations of Cinque Torri – ideal for a gentle hike with panoramic views – or a visit to the emerald waters of Lake Braies, one of the most photographed alpine lakes in Italy.

 

Day 6: Departure

Private transfer to Venice, Verona, Milan or any number of Italian cities to continue your journey.
